UKnowMetal Podcast #008: Laaz Rockit

Tonight's show is a "BLAST"! Ok, ok, admittedly a cheezy pun for a band that named themselves after a rocket known as the "Light Anti-armor Weapons System" or LAWS Rocket. As always, join the regular cast of characters as we "fire away" with the best tracks throughout the illustrious career of the Bay area's tragically underrated Laaz Rockit!

In addition to almost two hours of pure Laaz Rockit bliss, we also touch upon the barely noticed "Gack" spinning some killer tracks from these LR guys as well. On the first part of tonight's show, we'll visit with The Captain for "What's Good this Week" to cover the latest reissues from Thin Lizzy.

UKnowMetal Podcast #005: Early Pantera

Everyone remembers Pantera as the loud & aggressive heavy metal band from the 90's, but few have ever heard their beginnings. Tonight, we delve into their first four records from 1983-1988 when Pantera went from Glam to Power before hitting big on their 1990 release "Cowboys From Hell".

Download: 2012-04-27-UKnowMetal-Podcast (122min)

Pantera was formed by the Abbott brothers, Vinnie Paul (drums) and Dimebag Darrell (guitar) in 1981. Rex Brown (bass) and Terry Glaze (vocals) would join in late 1981. Looking for a new and heavier sound, Pantera replaced Terry in 1987 with Phil Anselmo. They originally started as a glam metal band, but switched to a much heavier sound when they released Cowboys from Hell in 1990.

For over four decades the criminally underrated "Riot" have been turning out some of the most solid hard rock and heavy metal to ever be recorded. Founded in NYC in 1975 by guitarist Mark Reale and reaching a peak in popularity in the early 80s, the band has continued a long-running successful career. Their sound started out as straight-up heavy metal, until the 1988 release of Thundersteel, when their musical direction changed more along the lines of power metal.

The only release in the veteran act's catalog that missed the top 10 was its self-titled 1978 debut, which peaked at No. 19. UKnowMetal Podcast #001: Jason Becker

On the show tonight, we feature the incredible talent of guitar virtuoso Jason Becker. Listen in as we sample Jason's work over the past 20+ years.

Download: 2012-02-03-UKnowMetal-Podcast (87min)
At the age of 16, he became part of the Mike Varney-produced duo Cacophony with his friend Marty Friedman. They released Speed Metal Symphony in 1987 and Go Off! in 1988. Cacophony broke up in 1989 and Becker began doing solo work, having released his first album Perpetual Burn in 1988. He later joined David Lee Roth's band and recorded one album with him. However, Becker's success was hampered by his then-diagnosed amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's Disease) and he was given three to five years to live. In 1996, Becker eventually lost the ability to speak and now communicates with his eyes via a system developed by his father. Despite his disability, he continues composing by using a computer.
